MS1035 World War II Letter Group. This offering consists of the letters written by Lt. Norbert V. "Bob" Bussmann from the European Theater home to his father in St. Louis, Missouri. Lt. Bussmann was a prolific letter writer. There are 228 letters totaling 996 pieces of paper. Some are written on both sides and I would estimate there are about 1,200 handwritten pages. There are 20 letters written in 1942, 29 written in 1943, 110 written in 1944 and 69 written in 1945. There are also 24 V-Mail letters. Lt Bussmann was in the invasion of North Africa and the invasion of Southern France. Each letter starts with the date and where he is located, such as "North Africa", "England", "Italy", "In A Troop Ship Off the Coast of France", "Corsica", "Sicily", etc. One letter, headed "Tunisia", speaks of enclosing a souvenir hankie for Therese. The "Souvenir de Tunis" hankie is included. Being an officer these letters did not have to be censored so there are references to being strafed by the Germans, shelled by the Germans and dive bombed by the Germans. I believe he ended up being entitled to eight battle stars. Lt Bussmann was well traveled before the war. Many of his descriptions of the locations he visits are like listening to an episode of the travel program "Rick Steve's Europe." Lt. Bussmann enjoyed going to movies and the St. Louis Municipal Opera before the war. He goes to movies and operas in Europe and critiques them for his father. In the course of the letters he speaks of his good friend Don who is serving in India. Don's wife is expecting and Don dies several months before his daughter is born. (The last name is in the letters.) Before the war Lt Bussmann built and sold homes. Many of the letters to his father go into great detail on how he intends to return to the business after the war. He discusses the size of the houses to be built, costs of labor and about how to cope with the lull after the post-war housing boom. He even sends a sketch of a proposed subdivision. He even considers solar homes. The early letters are addressed to his Dad, Selma (his stepmother), Therese (his sister) and Jim (his brother.) As the years progress Jim enlists in the army and is sent to Europe and Therese marries. The later letters are addressed to only Dad and Selma but there are also letters written directly to Therese and Jim. In North Africa he is detailed to escort Hollywood actress Carole Landis while she is there on a USO tour. There is a signed letter from Landis to Lt Bussmann on Landis' stationary and a newspaper article from a 1943 edition of the St. Louis Globe Democrat newspaper with a photo of Landis and Bussmann and describing the encounter. Lt. Bussmann speaks of writing letters to YANK magazine. At least one was printed. In a later YANK issue he was "taken to task" by other soldiers for what he wrote. Prior to the war he was dating Sylvia from Brooklyn. Marriage was being considered. Lt Bussmann dates numerous women while in north Africa, England and Italy. While in Italy Lt Bussmann meets a local girl, Tina Seafora, falls in love and marries her. Many letters detail the difficulties of planning a wedding in war-torn Italy. Tina, a school teacher who knew no English when they met, learns English and some of the later letters are written by her to the Bussmann family. Before the wedding Mt Vesuvius erupts. The Lt. writes of helping evacuate the local citizenry , including his future in-laws. He writes at length of watching the eruption for hours and having to back up every twenty minutes because of the heat. The wedding happens on time and there is a Bussmann Fuse Company newsletter of August, 1944 with an article and two photos of the wedding. Several months after the wedding Tina is pregnant. Again he writes of the difficulties of being a prospective father while conducting his job as an officer in an on-going war. Their son, Frank, is born and the family starts planning to go to America. They encounter great difficulties getting visas and boat passage for the family. Lt Bussmann passes up several oportunities to return to the states because he can't get permission for his family to accompany him. He asks his father to contact Senator Truman to get some help from that end. Later Lt Bussmann reports that he has heard from Vice-President Truman and there would be no help coming. Does he ever get his family to America? I'm not telling!
Also included are three YANK magazines that have detailed articles on the fighting in Italy. They are NOT the issues containing the letter he wrote to the magazine.
This offering is ripe with possibilities for research and a book. It is a war story and a love story. And it is not fiction! It took me ten days to read all the letters.
Please note: Lt Bussmann was interviewed in 2007 and there is a nine minute video of him on YouTube. Just search "Norbert Bussmann."
Also Note: Please check www.historyforsale.com for a similar Carole Landis autographed letter.
